The Budding
Proteas!
Opening batter Sandile |
The most recent
addition to the multitude of new sports clubs popping up in Chintsa is the Under-18
cricket team. They have benefited from a generous donation of cricket whites
from The Yang Foundation and some much appreciated individual donations including one by Richard (Mafuta) that bought match balls and gloves! After a
few months of practice the boys faced their first competitive match last Friday.
Already a
competition surfer and stalwart of the Unstressed Surf School, 15 year Lulama was
nominated captain by his peers. We took
some time to catch up with him and find out a little more about the budding
young Proteas!
The youngest member of the team Awonke |
How long ago did the
Cricket Club get started?
The Cricket Club started mid-November and it’s been going since
then.
How often do you guys
practise?
We practise every Friday but when sometimes
go for a practice during the week depending on whether we have no home work or whether
we have a chance if so then we go for a practise.
How many Cricket players
does your team has? My team have 15 players.
Who is the team’s best
bet man?
Awonke is our best bet man. He is the youngest
player!
Who’s the team's best
bowler?
Luvuyo is the team’s best bowler.
Do you be have a cricket
hero?
No I don’t have one because I didn’t watch much
Cricket because I didn’t see myself playing Cricket till last year.
What ages are your team
mates?
My team mates are between 11 and 18 years.
Have you played against
any teams yet if yes did your team won?
Unfortunately
we lost our first match.
Who was the opposition?
We played against Mzwini village team and they won our first game
but we sure gave it the best.
When is your next game?
Next week Saturday and we will be playing here from home. We will
play against the same team. We are at home this time so we will win!
We thank Lulama for his time and wish the
whole team the best of luck for the upcoming return fixture against Mzweni. If
you are in the area the match will take place on Saturday 15th
February 1.30pm at Chintsa Sports Field. The boys could do with your support!
You can also support by donating any old cricket equipment. We currently only have 3 pads between 2 batters! Drop it off at the AHJ office in Chintsa.
